Ballarat waterproofing membrane inspection

Wet area membranes sit under the tiles and are only visible for a day or so. We look at coverage, upturns and junctions while the membrane is bare and cured, before the first tile is laid.

Why it matters here

Waterproofing inspections on Ballarat builds

Bathrooms in a cold climate stay damp for longer between uses, and moisture that gets past a membrane has little warmth to dry it out. In a Ballarat home a small gap at a hob or a door threshold can mean wet framing and mould inside the wall for years before anyone sees it.

What we find at this stage in Ballarat

  • Membrane unprotected from foot traffic and trades
  • Water and debris in the bath hob cavity
  • No water stop at a cavity slider threshold
  • Waterproofing behind cabinets not confirmed
  • Bath waste recess full of rubbish
  • Floor membrane scuffed before tiling

FAQ

Waterproofing inspections in Ballarat: common questions

Which parts of a wet area are looked at?

Membrane coverage on floors and walls, upturns, junctions, water stops at doorways, and the bath and shower set-downs, all checked visually against AS 3740 and the NCC.

Why does a damaged membrane matter if tiles go over it?

Tiles and grout are not waterproof. Water reaches the membrane every time the shower runs, so any break in it lets water into the framing below.

What is a water stop?

An angle set into the floor at a wet area doorway so water cannot run out under the door into the next room or the frame.

Do you flood test the bathroom?

No. We inspect the membrane visually. A flood test is a separate procedure that the builder or waterproofer can arrange.

Can I book this on its own?

Yes. Many owners book it as a separate visit because the gap between membrane and tiling is so short. Request a quote online for the timing you need.

Who fixes a membrane problem?

The waterproofer, before tiling starts. Repairs at this point are quick; once tiles are on, the floor or wall has to come up.
